K-W-L Method
This stands for what you Know, what you Want to learn, and what you have Learned. This simple approach to learning often underlies many other methods. Consider the topic chosen for study in the light of the following questions, recording answers as you go:
- What do the children know already?
- What do they want (or need) to know?
- What are their questions?
- What resources will they use?
- What will they do?
- What did they learn?
- How will they record and/or publish their findings?
The following is a simple example, completed by the child:
Breeding Silkie
- What do I know already?
- They need clean water; hen won't lay until chicks are grown or taken away; it's okay to leave rooster with chicks; need warm sheltered place.
- What do I want to know? How long must the chicks stay with hen until they are independent?
- What resources will I use? I will look in the Encyclopaedia, the library, our CD-ROM encyclopaedia, and perhaps ask a chicken breeder.
- What did I learn? I learned how long the chicks must stay with their mother.
- How will I record and/or publish my findings? I will write the date that I can remove the chicks from their mother's care on my calendar.
