Contracts A good feature of this contract is the opportunity provided at the bottom for the child to evaluate his or her own learning and activities. Involving the children in the planning, recording and evaluation processes of learning activities fosters co-operation and responsibility, and builds skills in critical and reflective thinking. It helps them to discover their own strengths and weaknesses, and to become aware of their learning interests and needs. It also allows you an insight into their learning processes and how they feel about the activities you have set for them.
The example over the page is a check-list of arranged work the child has to complete in a given week. It demonstrates the type of structured activity or learning taking place each day, and allows for spontaneous learning activities to be recorded. Like the last example this one does not indicate what learning is taking place, and needs to be supplemented with additional recording. This type of check-list works well with a learning centred approach to education. It is worth noting that this contract has been tailored to the interests of the individual child, as well as meeting the curriculum needs of the parent. As a result, this learning contract will have greater appeal to the child. It also helps to demonstrate to the child that learning and education are not restricted to ‘book’ work, but flow from all the activities he or she does.
