Some Examples Of Recording And Evaluation
(continued)
If you have to prepare an annual report for educational authorities, a brief summary of your children's progress, taken from viewing your records, can be prepared. Some children enjoy receiving home school reports and show them to their schooled friends and relatives. This type of ‘report’ can also be prepared for inclusion into a ‘portfolio’. This is a special folder of achievement you and your children can prepare for each of them, and replaces school records. Such a portfolio can be useful when your child is applying for positions in tertiary educational institutions, or employment in their teenage years. The following may give you an idea of the type of evaluative comments you can use.
Roger Paine, December 1988 (aged 5)
Roger is making good progress in all areas, especially reading and writing skills. He knows the letters of the alphabet and is capable of recognizing initial, middle and final sounds in 3 letter words. He can sound and write 3 letter words and is beginning to know the digraphs used in sounding words. He is also able to write some non-phonetic words which is very good. He has good letter formation and hand control. Roger is handling new maths concepts well. He likes to have an adult to help him when learning, particularly to assist him with the instructions and also for reinforcement. He gets on well with other children, and has developed two new friendships this year. He is very capable of organising his own time and finding activities to keep himself and his friends busy. He likes to have a lot of his own time and would prefer not to be organized, but he works well with direction. He is most often very co-operative, and shows keen interest in what he is doing.
Personal assessment and evaluation recording can be easily done by the children using forms prepared in advance. You can design the form yourself and photocopy for future use. The children simply fill out at agreed or regular intervals a form either you or they can design.
