Some Examples Of Recording And Evaluation
(continued)

List of Month's Activities - May

Often in planning for a specified period of time, for example three months, or a year, specific activities are indicated in the learning program as necessary to complete the study. Usually these are tailored to the type of study or subject undertaken. The following example was taken from a teenager’s learning program in Intercultural Studies.

To complete this area of your learning program you will need to:

  • Complete the prescribed reading
  • Be actively involved in initiating and participating in discussions on the topic.
  • Keep a specific journal related to this area throughout your studies which includes -
    • reports on all excursions and field trips,
    • personal reflections on each section of the study,
    • summaries of important discussions, talks given,
    • notes on films and videos viewed,
    • other information relevant to the study.
  • Present a report which may be an oral, written or video/film presentation which reflects the objectives of the area of study. This needs to be negotiated with me before beginning, and a date set for completion. The report needs to contain at least 1000 words (oral report requires transcript, use of visual and other aids), and take any format.
  • Present a brief evaluation of learning in relation to knowledge, attitudes and skills.

The following recording sample is a simple contract check-list, designed as a brief and easy way to monitor progress in the planned educational program. This one has been designed to be completed by the child on a daily basis, and indicates activities and the work expected to be done. The contract clearly sets out how much work must be done each day, although not in detail. It doesn’t demonstrate the nature of what is being learned, or the learning value of spontaneous or play activities. This check-list predominantly lists ‘book work’ activity. Additional recording should supplement such a basic check-list.

Contracts are explained in more detail in Part 6.11.

"The best thing I ever did when I started homeschooling was read this book.  It has all the practical stuff, but most importantly it encourages you to look at why you are wanting to homeschool, and what you are wanting to achieve. It will also show you that there are many different ways to home educate (from 'school at home' to 'natural learning'), and encourages you to find  what works best for you and your children. I still go back and look at it all the time." Nikki, ACT
